Thank you for viewing. This is a pair of teacups from Kasan Kiln, Arita-yaki, made by Kasan. Arita-yaki, porcelain manufactured mainly in Arita, Saga Prefecture, is known as the oldest porcelain in Japan. Arita-yaki is characterized by its translucent white porcelain skin, sometsuke (dyeing) drawn with gos (indigo pigment), and the gorgeous akae (red painting) using overglaze paints such as red, green, yellow, purple, and blue. In the Edo period, porcelain fired in Arita was shipped from the port of Imari, so it was also called "Imari-yaki." The delicate style of Arita-yaki influenced the Meissen kiln in Europe and the Jingdezhen kiln in China, becoming world-famous. Arita-yaki has been widely loved for over 400 years as tableware and crafts.
