Author Profile: A Japanese literary critic and French literature scholar, and a professor at the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo. Awarded the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award in 1970 for "Geijutsu no Riro Horakucho 1968." Awarded the Mainichi Art Award in 1977 for "Gido Shushin, Zekkai Chushin." He has authored and edited many books. His major works are included in "Terada Toru: Hyoron" (First and Second Series, a total of 15 volumes) published by Shicho-sha, and he has continued to publish many works since then. From his deep love of painting, he leads us to the depths of the art world with his solid and dense thoughts and keen insight. The book includes 32 essays discussing art, ranging from Seiji Toriumi to Hanjiro Sakamoto, Chozaburo Inoue, Takeshi Hayashi, Seiji Toriumi, and then to Matisse, Rouault, and further to Hakuin, Sesshu, and Jakuchu, as well as discussing the art theories of Hideo Kobayashi, Kotaro Takamura, and Balzac (Kobunsha). This is a copy of Toru Terada's "Kaiga to Sono Shuhen" (Painting and Its Surroundings), published by Kobunsha in June 1959, first edition, with a slipcase. The slipcase has some yellowing and minor scratches, but the main body has little yellowing, and there are no writings or annotations. There are small brown stains on about 5 pages of the edges. The endpaper illustration is by Seiji Toriumi, and the cover design and title lettering are by Heisuke Sanuma.
