"Gakusei Sōsho" (Student Series) is a series of 12 volumes of educational books planned and edited by Eijiro Kawai, a professor at the Faculty of Economics of Tokyo Imperial University, and published by Nihon Hyoronsha from 1936 to 1941. This series covered a wide range of themes, including culture, life, society, history, and science, targeting university students and students of old-system high schools at the time. Just before and during the Greater East Asia War, there was a trend of affirming fascism and denying Marxism and liberalism. In such a historical context, Kawai planned and edited the "Gakusei Sōsho" for students who were seeking a spiritual pillar. The writing staff included intellectuals of the highest caliber at the time, and the guiding spirit of the series was idealism, personalism, and intellectualism. "Gakusei Sōsho" was well-received by students at the time, became a bestseller, and was reprinted repeatedly. It gave meaning to life and courage to many students and those who were going to war due to student mobilization. The content was about intellectual life and the philosophy of life, which are still relevant today, and it led the way in intellectual life and the philosophy of life after the war.
