Ibn Jubayr (1145-1217), born in Valencia during the period when Spain was ruled by Muslims, embarked on a pilgrimage to Mecca from Granada in 1183 and returned two years later. This is a Japanese translation of his travelogue, "Rihla" (Journey), which meticulously describes his experiences and observations during the journey. The translation was compiled by Professor Katsuji Fujimoto of Kansai University and Professor Osamu Ikeda of Osaka University of Foreign Studies, with the cooperation of Arabic language researchers in the Osaka area, and published in 1992 by the Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies of Kansai University as "Kansai University Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies Translation and Annotation Series 6: Ibn Jubayr's Travelogue." "Rihla" (Journey) is considered an outstanding pilgrimage travelogue, unparalleled in its time, and its descriptions were borrowed by many, including Ibn Juzayy, who wrote the travelogue of Ibn Battuta. It is also valued as a valuable historical source for understanding the situation of the Crusades and Sicily under Norman rule at the time. The book on offer was purchased at a used bookstore in Tokyo in the late 1990s and comes with a slipcase, so the main body of the book shows almost no yellowing or damage.
