Upon closer inspection, each face is unique, adding to its charm. Takasago is an auspicious symbol of longevity and marital harmony. The rake held by the old man (尉, jō) symbolizes "gathering good fortune (wealth)," while the broom held by the old woman (姥, uba) symbolizes "warding off evil (protection)." This represents "a couple supporting each other, with the husband gathering fortune (wealth) and the wife protecting and managing the home." The "jō and uba" refer to the pine tree spirits in the legend of "Aioi no Matsu" (相生の松), which is the origin of the Noh play "Takasago," famous for the song "Takasago ya kono ura fune ni ho o agete..." ("Takasago, raise the sails on this harbor boat..."). Pine trees have been considered sacred trees since ancient times, and their evergreen nature symbolizes longevity. They also have male and female aspects, reminiscent of a married couple. "Aioi no Matsu" refers to a pine tree where a black pine (male pine) and a red pine (female pine) grow from a single root, considered a particularly sacred tree, revered as a symbol of matchmaking, marital harmony, and longevity.
