- Design: Radish openwork carving - Shape: Circular with a cutout in the center - Material: Iron - Size: Height 6.7cm, Width 6.5cm - Weight: Approximately 127g This is an iron tsuba (sword guard) from my grandfather's long-held collection. It is an openwork carving realistically depicting the leaves and roots of a radish (turnip). The shape is circular, with a nakago-ana (tang hole) in the center for the sword's tang, and hitsu-ana (holes) on either side for the kogai (hairpin) and kozuka (small knife). The swelling of the radish and even the veins of the leaves are finely detailed in this piece. Truly a radish tsuba! Such openwork tsuba demonstrate the high skill and artistry of the Edo period and later. Please consider adding it to your collection or for display!
