The Hakudan-nuri, as the name suggests, is said to be named after its resemblance to the amber color of sandalwood. After applying an undercoat of lacquer, a smooth layer of lacquer is created by quickly layering more lacquer. Thin gold or silver leaf is then applied on top, and lacquer is applied and dried. Finally, a transparent lacquer is applied as a topcoat and polished to achieve a unique amber color. The lacquer is applied in a spiral pattern to highlight the lacquer on the fountain pen body. Therefore, the spiral pattern drawn beneath the Hakudan-nuri appears to float on the surface of the fountain pen. In addition to Hakudan-nuri, this work also employs a technique called Kintsugi. This represents the understated beauty of Japan, born from the spirit of cherishing things. Kintsugi is a traditional technique of repairing broken or chipped ceramics with lacquer and finishing them with gold or silver metal powder. It embraces the imperfections as wabi-sabi and emphasizes the beauty. The Kintsugi applied to the ends of the Hakudan-nuri fountain pen functions as a connector, joining the cap, neck, and barrel.
