She lost her mother at the age of 9, and although she took her mother's place and did housework, she overcame her father's opposition and became a novice in a convent. When Catherine was 18 years old and a novice, she had a strange dream. In the dream, "a certain priest" appeared and told her, "You will find me someday. God has a plan for you." Later, Catherine realized that "a certain priest" was Vincent de Paul, the founder of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. In January 1830, Catherine entered the Daughters of Charity, and on the night of July 18 of the same year, she was awakened by a child and went to the church, where she witnessed the appearance of the Virgin Mary and received words from Our Lady. On November 27 of the same year, during the evening meditation, the Virgin Mary appeared before Catherine again. The Virgin Mary was standing on the ground within an oval frame. The Virgin Mary said, "Tell this image to the confessor and tell them to wear the medal, and say, 'Those who wear it will receive great graces.'" Catherine did as she was told, and the confessor requested the Archbishop of Paris without revealing Catherine's identity, and the medal was made. Since then, various miraculous graces have been given to those who wear this medal and pray for the intercession of the Virgin Mary, and it has come to be called the "Miraculous Medal." After that, Catherine devoted herself to welfare activities alongside her religious life, never speaking to anyone about the appearance of the Virgin Mary, and passed away in 1876.
