The history of Takaoka casting is old, beginning when Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the Kaga domain, built a castle in Takaoka and entered it. Toshinaga invited casters to present-day Kanaya-machi, Takaoka, and established a foundry. The third lord, Toshitsune, prohibited the relocation of Takaoka townspeople, aiming to transform Takaoka into a town of commerce and industry. In the early days, daily necessities such as pots, kettles, and iron kettles, as well as agricultural tools such as hoes and plows, were produced. In the mid-Edo period, copper castings such as temple bells and lanterns began to be made. Kanaya-machi, the birthplace of Takaoka casting, was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2012.
