The "Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars" (Nijūshikō) is a book from China that features 24 individuals who were particularly outstanding in their filial piety, meant to serve as models for later generations. It was compiled by Guo Jujing of the Yuan Dynasty [Note 1]. Some of the stories introduced here have become generalized as four-character idioms or the names of related items. It was also introduced to Japan, and illustrations of the figures are depicted on the architecture of temples and other structures.
