The story depicts Princess Takiyasha, the daughter of Masakado Taira, and Yoshikado, who, following their father's will, gather companions in an abandoned house in Shimousa Province, which had been devastated during Masakado's rebellion, where they are haunted by youkai (supernatural beings). Oya no Tarou Mitsukuni, a retainer of Minamoto Yorinobu, defeats the youkai and thwarts their plot. In the original work, multiple skeletons appear, but Kuniyoshi replaced them with a single, giant skeleton, creating a powerful composition. This is also a representative work of the youkai known as "Gashadokuro" (giant skeleton). Originally a triptych, this design focuses on the moment when Oya no Tarou Mitsukuni subdues Arai Maru, Princess Takiyasha's loyal retainer, and a large skull bursts through the screen from behind.
