This is a komon (small pattern) kimono made using the wax-resist dyeing technique (rōketsu-zome) on rinzu fabric with a large flowing water pattern. (Photo 8 shows the flowing water pattern.) The kimono features leaves and small flowers and leaves within the leaf shapes, dyed in pale pink, light blue, and other colors, with white pigment lightly applied. In this dyeing process, the dye permeates the fabric and threads to create the kimono pattern. The dye spreads through the fibers of the thread from where it is applied. To dye each element a different color, it's necessary to prevent the dye from coloring areas other than the intended ones. Therefore, this komon uses "rōketsu-zome," a wax-resist dyeing technique. In rōketsu-zome, the process begins by applying melted wax with a brush to draw outlines on the fabric. By applying dye within the outlines, the colors do not bleed, allowing for the creation of images on the fabric. Furthermore, by creating drying cracks in the wax applied to the fabric, the dye seeps into the cracks, resulting in a more complex design. This is a unique expression of rōketsu-zome. Through these processes, the leaves, small flowers, and other elements are then dyed with a mid-tone color between a dull, greenish-brown (aokuchiba) and a dark, dull yellowish-green (aoni), which resembles blue clay. Photos 9 and 10 show the fabric after wax-resist dyeing, with white pigment and pink and light blue dyes applied, and the ground color dyed, showcasing the structure of the rinzu chirimen fabric, which uses strongly twisted yarns for the weft. Each step requires advanced techniques, resulting in a delicate komon with a deep, rich color that has permeated the threads. The lining (hakkake) is white habutae silk, and the skirt lining (hakkake) uses plain seika fabric in a reddish-brown color. Measurements: Length (from back) 153 cm, Sleeve to sleeve 64.5 cm, Sleeve width 32.5 cm, Sleeve length 49 cm, Back width 30 cm, Front width 23.5 cm. Wide collar, with snap fasteners. It comes with basting threads and appears to be free of stains. We have checked for stains and dirt as thoroughly as possible, but there may be some oversights. We appreciate your understanding.
