Iya Shrine is a shrine located in Iya, Higashiizumo-cho, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It is one of the O-u Six Shrines. It is located near the purported site of Yomi-hirasaka, which appears in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Additionally, Mount Hiba in neighboring Yasugi City has a related sacred site, the mausoleum of Izanami-no-Mikoto, as recorded in the Kojiki. This offering includes the following two items: 1. Goshuin (temple stamp) 2. Yuisyo-sho (historical document) The year of its founding is unknown. However, as it is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, Izumo no Kuni Fudoki, and Engishiki Jinmyocho, it is believed that the shrine existed at least during the Nara period. Near the shrine is Yomi-hirasaka, said to be the entrance to the land of the dead (Yomi), and it is said that the shrine was highly valued by the central government since ancient times as a place deeply connected to the land of the dead. The place where the land of the dead was sealed: Yomi-hirasaka Izanagi-no-Mikoto, wanting to see the deceased Izanami-no-Mikoto, goes to the land of the dead, but is horrified by her changed appearance and flees. He barely escapes while being pursued and seals the entrance with a large rock. That place is "Yomi-hirasaka." It is also called "Ifuya-saka" in Izumo Province, and it is said to refer to this area, where Iya Shrine is located in Iya, Higashiizumo-cho, today. It is possible that people, pitying the goddess Izanami-no-Mikoto, who was to be eternally confined in the land of the dead at Yomi-hirasaka, founded this shrine in this location.
