Hirano Shrine is a shrine located in Hiranomiyamoto-cho, Kita-ku, Kyoto City. It is a Shikinai-sha (Myojin Taisha) and one of the Twenty-Two Shrines (Kamishichisha). Its former rank was Kanpei Taisha, and it is currently a Beppyo Jinja of the Jinja Honcho. The divine crest is "cherry blossom." The shrine is believed to have been founded around the time of the Heian-kyo relocation. Recent research suggests that it was originally a shrine dedicated to the ancestral god of Emperor Kanmu's mother, Takano no Niigasa (the maternal relative of Emperor Kanmu), and was enshrined in Heijo-kyo. It is a famous shrine as a scenic spot for cherry blossoms, with about 60 varieties and about 400 cherry trees planted. The night sky colored by cherry blossoms boasts one of the best beauties in Kyoto.
