Château de Fontainebleau Tourist Guide BOOK Slight discoloration and damage. This is one of the largest palaces in France, with a history dating back to the 12th century. It was home to successive French monarchs from the Capetian dynasty to Napoleon III. A distinctive feature of Fontainebleau Castle is that it offers a panoramic view of architectural styles from the 12th to the 18th centuries, from Francis I to Louis XVI. The construction and decorations vary depending on the era, encompassing all of the 18th century. Originally a hunting lodge for the royal family to enjoy hunting in the suburbs, it was expanded upon by successive kings to become the castle we see today. (Based on the Renaissance style, you can see the transition of architectural styles from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century) Surrounded by vast forests and beautiful gardens, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The "Farewell Staircase," where Napoleon bid farewell to his Imperial Guard when he abdicated and was exiled to Elba, is famous. Originally a royal hunting lodge, Francis I rebuilt it into a luxurious Renaissance-style palace.
