Based on the novel of the same name by Arano Inoue, which depicts the special relationship between three people – the author's father, author Mitsuharu Inoue, his mother, and Jakucho Setouchi – this film stars Shinobu Terajima and Etsushi Toyokawa. Miharu Osanai, a popular author, meets postwar writer Atsuro Shiraki during a lecture tour, and they become romantically involved. Meanwhile, Shiraki's wife, Shoko, maintains a peaceful married life by tacitly accepting her husband's promiscuous relationships. However, for Miharu, Shiraki is more than just a physical relationship; through their connection through "writing," he becomes irreplaceable. Shinobu Terajima plays Miharu Osanai, modeled after Jakucho Setouchi; Etsushi Toyokawa plays Atsuro Shiraki, modeled after Mitsuharu Inoue; and Ryoko Hirosue plays Shoko, Shiraki's wife.
