Suwa Grand Shrine is a group of four shrines located around Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture. It is a Myojin Taisha shrine and the Ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of Shinano Province. Its former official rank was Kanpei Taisha. It is the head shrine of approximately 25,000 Suwa Shrines nationwide. The following six items are provided: 1. Goshuin (temple stamp) of the Honmiya Shrine 2. Goshuin of the Maemiya Shrine 3. Goshuin of the Akimiya Shrine 4. Goshuin of the Harumiya Shrine 5. Explanation of origins (for visiting the four shrines) 6. Commemorative item (drawstring bag: unopened) Various legends tell of the shrine's origins. According to the "Kojiki" and "Sendai Kuji Hongi," before the descent of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu Omikami, Takemikazuchi-no-Kami pressured Okuninushi-no-Kami to cede the land. In response, Takeminakata-no-Kami, the second son of Okuninushi-no-Kami, opposed the land transfer and challenged Takemikazuchi-no-Kami to a battle, but lost and fled to Suwa. It is said that he vowed to never leave Suwa and to obey the commands of the heavenly gods.
