Shokiku is the pseudonym of Takayoshi Kido (Kogoro Katsura). He was called Mr. Shokiku Kido, and was one of the three great figures of the Meiji Restoration (the others being Takamori Saigo and Toshimichi Okubo). A collection of his calligraphy, "Mr. Shokiku's Ink Traces," also remains. He was a student of Shoin Yoshida, and his wife was Kimatsu (Matsuko), so he had a connection with the name "Pine" (松). He was also a leader of the Choshu clan, and he brought about the Satcho Alliance with Ryoma Sakamoto as an intermediary. After the Meiji Restoration, he became a Councilor and promoted the Charter Oath of Five Articles, the return of the lands and people to the Emperor, and the abolition of the feudal domains and establishment of prefectures. The Charter Oath of Five Articles included the idea that would become the foundation of Japan's national polity: "Deliberative assemblies shall be widely established and all matters decided by public discussion." The fifth article states, "Knowledge shall be sought throughout the world so as to strengthen the foundations of imperial rule." A writing that seems to be similar to the fifth article is written on the ink.
