This is a long undergarment (nagajuban) made of fine crepe silk (seika chirimen) for the袷 season (worn during the cooler months). The fabric has a puckered texture on the surface. This is called "shibo" (crepe). The warp threads use yarn with almost no twist, while the weft threads are woven with twists to the right and left, creating the chirimen fabric. The unevenness on the fabric surface is created when the twisted weft threads shrink during refining. Despite the unevenness, it is characterized by its gentle touch. The entire nagajuban is dyed gray, and the back has square stitched-and-tied designs, with a depiction of a bamboo horse (takeuma) in the white spaces. Generally, a bamboo horse (takeuma) is a type of play equipment consisting of two bamboo poles with a footrest, used for walking. However, historically, a toy where bamboo is imagined as a horse and dragged along was also called a takeuma. According to Santō Kyōden's "Kottōshū" (1814-1815), "'Takeuma' refers to a game where one rides a bamboo stalk with branches and leaves, imagining it as a horse, and runs while holding reins." (From Wikipedia) I know nothing about sumo wrestling, and I have no idea if the bamboo horse has anything to do with it. I only know that the former yokozuna (grand champion) Chiyonofuji was a famous yokozuna known by the nickname "Wolf." This nagajuban depicts a luggage case modeled after a saddle with Chiyonofuji's name on it, hung on a bamboo horse, with a gunbai (sumo referee's fan) attached, and a handle of a sword. It seems that some people have kimonos but don't have a nagajuban that fits. If it suits your kimono, please consider purchasing it. It is made in the 袷 style, and the sleeves are double-layered with the same fabric, in the muso (sleeves lined only at the hem) style. The lining uses soft habutae silk in a grayish-blackish-green color. Both the outer and lining are made of fine silk.
