This is part of the VPO's first complete set of Mozart symphonies. In the 1980s, the period approach using historical instruments was beginning to attract attention, but Levine, while using a modern orchestra, actively incorporated the new research results and performance ideas of the time, such as strictly adhering to the repeats written in the score, keeping the orchestra's size somewhat modest (not too large), and devising the arrangement of the string instruments. Nevertheless, because it's the VPO, it cherishes a rich, warm, and lustrous sound. Furthermore, in fast movements, there is a brisk tempo, with youthful energy and dynamism. ① is passionate, powerfully expressing the intensity of the young "Sturm und Drang." It is weighty and dramatic. ② has the momentum of an opera overture, being light and flamboyant. ③ is bright and expansive, with a distinguished elegance. ④ is rhythmic and full of lively joy. ⑤ is witty, demonstrating the refined charm of Vienna. In short, even in the early and middle period symphonies, they are not treated as mere light pieces, but are expressed with sincerity and power.
