This work is a single sheet from a very rare katazome calendar designed by Keiichi Torii, a dyeing and craft artist. It is an original design from September 1954, during the post-war reconstruction period. Keiichi Torii was a katazome artist who was active from the 1950s to the late Showa era. He was a disciple of Keisuke Serizawa, one of the central figures of the Mingei (folk art) movement. His commercial designs included packages, calendars, wrapping paper, and matchbox designs for Nihonbashi "Taimeiken," Kudan "Arare Sakaguchi," and Odawara "Suzhiro Kamaboko," among others. He also designed the covers and titles for the essay "Yoshoku-ya" by the first owner of Taimeiken, Shingo Modeki, and "Soen Design Book NO.6/Partial Design." From the image, you can clearly see the texture of the Japanese paper at the time, the bleeding of the dyed colors, and the powerful lines. There are signs of discoloration, stains, wrinkles, and folds due to aging. This is the unique "flavor" of vintage and antique items that have been stored for many years, and combined with the texture of the handmade Japanese paper, it adds to the depth that evokes history.
