Entered Toyo University in 1919 after graduating from Waseda Junior High School, and became a disciple of Kawaguchi Ekai. Later, he entered Rinzai University (currently Hanazono University). After graduation, he entered Myoshin-ji Temple's Soto (training hall), but soon transferred to Tenryu Soto. He practiced Zen under Seki Seisetsu and inherited his teachings. In 1949, he became the chief priest of Reiuin, a sub-temple of Myoshin-ji Temple, and the president of Hanazono University. In 1953, he became the teacher of the Shofuku Soto in Hyogo Prefecture. In 1978, he became the 24th Kancho (Chief Abbot) of the Myoshin-ji Temple sect.
