Shokiku is the pen name of Takayoshi Kido (Kogoro Katsura). He was called Mr. Shokiku Kido, and was one of the Three Great Men of the Meiji Restoration (the others being Takamori Saigo and Toshimichi Okubo), and a collection of his calligraphy, "Mr. Shokiku's Collected Works," remains. He was a student of Shoin Yoshida, and his wife was Kimatsu (Matsuko), so he had a connection with the pine tree (松, matsu). He was also a leader of the Choshu clan, and he brought about the Satcho Alliance with Ryoma Sakamoto as an intermediary. After the Meiji Restoration, he became a Councilor and promoted the Charter Oath of Five Articles, the return of the lands and people to the Emperor, and the abolition of the feudal domains and establishment of prefectures. The Charter Oath of Five Articles included, "Deliberative assemblies shall be widely established and all matters decided by public discussion," which formed the basis of Japan's national polity. The fifth article states, "Knowledge shall be sought throughout the world so as to strengthen the foundations of imperial rule." A writing that seems to be similar to the fifth article is written on the ink. "〇牟二千五百年皇威　長与日光傳万機餘暇" "髙臺〇〇見民家多少烟" ⇒ Interpretation: In the 2500th year of the Imperial era, the imperial authority illuminates Japan. Everything seems to be special.
