Matsumoto Castle's origins lie in Fukashi Castle, built during the Eisho era of the Sengoku period. As the world moved towards war, the Ogasawara clan, the guardians of Shinano, moved their residence from Igawa, known as Shinano-fuchu, to the foothills of the eastern mountains (present-day Satoyamabe). Later, Takeda Shingen of Kai chased away Ogasawara Nagatoki and chose Fukashi Castle as a base to rule the Matsumoto Plain, aiming to control Shinano. However, in 1582 (Tensho 10), Ogasawara Sadayoshi took advantage of the turmoil caused by the Honno-ji Incident to reclaim Fukashi Castle and renamed it Matsumoto Castle. In 1590 (Tensho 18), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi unified the country, Tokugawa Ieyasu was transferred to the Kanto region. At this time, Matsumoto Castle lord Ogasawara Hidemasa followed Ieyasu to Shimousa. Ishikawa Kazumasa and Yasunaga took over, improving the castle and the castle town, solidifying the foundation of Matsumoto Castle as a modern castle.
