This is a goshuin (temple stamp) from the annual festival of the Sannomiya Hachiman Shrine in Hage-go, Mimasaka Province, the place where Takeuchi-ryu Kobujutsu, the first established school in the history of Japanese Jujutsu and considered the origin of Japanese comprehensive martial arts, was founded.
It's a secluded shrine that is not often visited.
It is revered as a god of military fortune and success.
At the end of the Sengoku period, Lord Hisamori Takeuchi, the lord of Ichinose Castle in Mimasaka Province, who was the leader of the Hage-go samurai clan and survived the age of the warring states, secluded himself at Sannomiya Hachiman Shrine and performed ascetic practices while praying to the god Atago. On the seventh day, the day of fulfillment (June 24, 1532 AD), Lord Hisamori, exhausted both physically and mentally from fasting and training, was dozing with a wooden sword as a pillow. Then, an old man in the guise of a yamabushi (mountain ascetic), who was about seven shaku (a unit of length, approximately 2.1 meters) tall, appeared and imparted various secret techniques and the essence of military strategy. The yamabushi then said, "Never let your training be neglected," and vanished into the roaring thunder and lightning, riding a whirlwind and swirling dust. Lord Hisamori, believing that this yamabushi was an incarnation of the god Atago, followed the divine message and further devoted himself to the path of martial arts, and it is said that Takeuchi-ryu was completed by three generations: Hisamori, Hisakatsu, and Hisayoshi.
Due to this historical fact, "Takeuchi-ryu Kobujutsu" is said to be the first school established in the history of Japanese Jujutsu and the origin of Japanese comprehensive martial arts. It will celebrate its 500th anniversary in Reiwa 13 (2031).
